Removing a Popcorn Ceiling: What Worked, What Didn't, and What I'd Do Differently
I removed a popcorn ceiling during my bedroom renovation using a Makelift drywall sander, a palm sander, and a manual scraper. Here's what worked, what didn't, the mistakes I made, and the lessons I learned along the way.

Removing a Popcorn Ceiling: What Worked, What Didn't, and What I'd Do Differently
Popcorn ceilings were once popular, but many homeowners now prefer a cleaner and more modern look. When I started renovating one of my bedrooms, removing the popcorn ceiling quickly became one of the biggest challenges of the project.
Like many DIY projects, I learned that no single tool could do everything. Some tools worked great in large open areas, while others were better for corners and detail work. This article shares my real experience, including the tools I used, what worked well, what did not, and what I would do differently if I had to remove another popcorn ceiling.
Why I Decided to Remove the Popcorn Ceiling
Before installing new flooring and giving the room a fresh look, I wanted to deal with the ceiling first. Popcorn texture can trap dust, make a room feel dated, and complicate future repairs or painting.
Since the room was already empty and the old carpet had been removed, it was the perfect time to tackle the ceiling without worrying about damaging furniture.
Tools and Supplies Used in This Project
For this project, I used a combination of tools rather than relying on a single solution.
Makelift Drywall Ceiling Sander
The main tool I purchased was a Makelift drywall ceiling sander. It came with several sanding discs in different grit levels.
I started with a fine grit sandpaper, somewhere in the 300-plus range. Higher grit numbers are less aggressive and remove material more slowly, which helped me avoid damaging the drywall underneath.
Palm Sander
As the project progressed, I discovered that the palm sander gave me much better control in certain areas.
It was easier to manage and allowed me to work more carefully near edges and transition areas.
Manual Scraper
A large hand scraper became another important tool during the renovation.
While slower than power tools, it allowed me to work in tight spaces and areas where precision mattered more than speed.
What Worked Well
The Makelift ceiling sander worked very well on large open sections of the ceiling.
When covering broad areas, it saved time and reduced the amount of physical effort needed compared to sanding by hand.
The palm sander also performed well when I needed better control. Instead of fighting with a larger tool in difficult areas, I could slow down and work more accurately.
The manual scraper was surprisingly useful. It helped me reach spots that were difficult to sand and allowed me to remove texture more carefully near edges.
Using all three tools together produced the best results.
What Didn't Work as Expected
One lesson I learned is that larger tools are not always better.
The Makelift sander was excellent for speed, but it was harder to use in corners, along edges, and in areas requiring delicate control.
At first, I thought the ceiling sander would handle the entire project. In reality, I found myself switching between the ceiling sander, palm sander, and scraper depending on the area I was working on.
Another lesson was that patience matters. Trying to remove too much texture too quickly can create more repair work later.
Why I Didn't Remove Every Bit of Texture
One of the biggest decisions I made was not sanding the ceiling completely smooth.
Instead, I removed most of the popcorn texture while leaving enough surface character to create a subtle textured appearance.
The final result looked closer to a light knockdown-style finish rather than a perfectly smooth drywall ceiling.
For my project, this approach provided a good balance between appearance and effort.
Dust and Cleanup
Anyone considering a popcorn ceiling removal project should be prepared for dust.
Even with power tools, fine particles can travel throughout the room. Since I had already removed the carpet and emptied the bedroom, cleanup was much easier than it would have been in a furnished room.
Taking time to protect surrounding areas can save hours of cleanup later.
What I Would Do Differently
If I were starting another popcorn ceiling project today, I would:
Use the ceiling sander for large open areas.
Switch to a palm sander sooner for detailed work.
Keep a manual scraper nearby from the beginning.
Work slowly around edges and corners.
Focus on consistency rather than trying to achieve a perfectly smooth surface.
Most importantly, I would not expect a single tool to handle the entire job.
Final Thoughts
Removing a popcorn ceiling turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of my bedroom renovation. The process required patience, experimentation, and a willingness to adjust my approach as I learned what worked best.
The Makelift drywall ceiling sander helped speed up the project, but the palm sander and manual scraper were equally important. Together, these tools allowed me to achieve the look I wanted while avoiding unnecessary damage to the ceiling.
Every room is different, but my biggest takeaway is simple: use the right tool for the right task, and don't be afraid to combine methods when one tool alone isn't enough.
If you're planning a popcorn ceiling removal project, taking a flexible approach may save time, reduce frustration, and lead to better results.
